TOMATINA FESTIVAL

Buñol, Valencia

Tomatina festival

The history of the Tomatina goes back to 1945. Some young people who expected to see the parade of giants and big heads in the Plaza del Pueblo, tried to sneak through the crowd throwing one of the spectators on their way. This man, annoyed, picked tomatoes from a nearby vegetable stand and began to throw them at the young ones and a pitched tomato-based battle was unleashed. At present it is one of the most internationally recognized festivals. In 2002 it was declared Festival of International Tourist Interest.
