GARDEN CITY AND WORKER'S QUARTER

Sagunt, Valencia

Garden City and Worker's Quarter

Founded as a residential area as far back as the 1920s. The original intention was to recreate aspects of the living conditions of Basque managers both in terms of architecture and in the landscaped and residential environment. Scholars emphasize the northern (Basque-Atlantic) character of these single-family mansions and townhouses, particularly unusual as a construction format in the Mediterranean area. There are wide roads and pavements. Gardens with plants, trees and bushes designed to protect family privacy, also used as a restricted pedestrian and mobile traffic area. This ensemble is made up of a total of 22 houses or residential dwellings that contribute to the differentiation of the three levels of class stratification in construction, throughout the whole of this factory town: the workers' dwellings neighbourhood, the area of semi-detached housing on the borders of the managers’ area (built in the 1950s) for middle managers, and the residential mansions for senior executives.
